Mass Communication Department

About Department

The Department of Mass Communication, under the School of Social Sciences, is a fledgling department headed by three young Assistant Professors. But the youthfulness of the Faculty has been a comparative advantage as it reflects energetic engagement and readiness for innovation as exemplified by the activities. The objective of this Department is to develop into a nodal centre for educational learning, research and training in the field of mass communication in the North Eastern Region of India and emerge as the most networked research centre in the discipline nationally as well as globally. With a meaningful push, the Department is ready to take a quantum jump.

The Department was expressly set up in 2005 with the main objective of offering formal academic training to aspiring media personnel and scholars as there was no other formally recognized centre/ institution for media studies in the state. In this short span of 5 years, our students have already made big strides. Many of them are well placed in national and local media houses - both Print and Electronic, Central and State services, while some have opted for research to pursue a career in academics.

Although there is a vibrant media in the state as indicated by the significant number of local dailies, a vastly popular local cable television channel as well as a flourishing 'digital' film industry, there has been a lack of facilities for higher learning, research and training in the field of media and communication. As the field of media and communication is relatively new to the region but gaining significance with every passing day, there has been tremendous interest in the course offered by the Department as indicated by the number of applicants to the course every year.

Important Milestones:

September, 2005
One-year Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication (PGDJMC) estd., with the Public Relations Officer, Mr M Saratchandra as Head in Charge and four Guest faculties.

January, 2008
PGDJMC upgraded to M.A. in Mass Communication. One-year Special M.A. in Mass Communication was introduced as a one-off course to enable the students who have completed PGDJMC to obtain M.A. degree.

January 2011
PhD Programme in Mass Communication opened and two scholars selected for enrolment under the programme with University Fellowships. This is in addition to the two scholars already working under the supervision of Dr. Ganesh Sethi of the Department.
