About the Department
The Department of Vocational Studies and Skill Development (DVSSD) was established by Manipur University with the approval of University Grants Commission (UGC) for running NSQF related vocational courses with effect from the academic year 2021-22. Prior to this, UGC approved vocational courses had been run in the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development (CESD) under the School of Social Sciences since 2015 with an objective to act as a catalyst to the promotion and advancement of entrepreneurship and skill development activities in the state of Manipur in particular and the nation in general. Today, entrepreneurship and skill development activities are regarded as one of the most important determinants for the industrial growth of a country and it has emerged as dynamic and vibrant area of any growing economy. It contributes a lot in the employment generation and helps in the socio-economic development of the country or the state. In the present-day global competition, establishment of a business unit and sustaining it, is becoming a big challenge. The dearth of the entrepreneurial and managerial skills is one of the major problems being confronted by all the developing economies especially the region like Manipur. Today, Manipur and North eastern states have become a major place of attraction for entrepreneurship, trade and commerce due to the Act East Policy of the Government of India. Both the Trans-Asian highways and Trans-
Asian railway will be passing through Manipur (Moreh-Tamu sector) and Manipur is now becoming the gateway of India to South East Asian countries as it is bordering with Myanmar. In order to meet the global challenges and the new opportunities thrown to the industrial development in the region and also to generate more employment opportunities for the youths and utilization of the human resource potentials, entrepreneurship and skill development activities have to be given a priority. With increasing unemployment among the educated youths, the need is being felt for giving due attention to employable skills in higher education too. Further, there is a need to motivate and guide the educated youths to enable them to move a step forward and take up a career of self-employment and establish start-up units as entrepreneurs and they may become job creators in the tight job market.
The Department/Centre intends to undertake the activities for promoting education, research, training and consultancy in the area of entrepreneurship and other industry related skill development activities inter alia the following.
1. To provide training on entrepreneurship and skill development programmes and to create avenues for employability of the educated youths.
2. To groom entrepreneurs and to acquire sound management knowledge for running the organization in general and small-scale industry, export-import units, services business and unorganized sectors etc. in particular.
3. To run higher degree/diploma level courses on entrepreneurship and its allied areas and create avenues for the youths to take up entrepreneurship as an alternative career.
4. To provide training programmes for the skill development activities particularly in establishing enterprises and export-oriented units based on the resources available in the state of Manipur.
5. To conduct Management Development Programmes/ Trainings for working executives and managers of Private, government and non-governmental organizations for sustaining competitive advantage.
6. To prepare and publish literature related to entrepreneurship, project reports industrial and management development activities.
7. To identify, design and conduct skill development training programmes for existing and budding entrepreneurs.
8. To organize seminars, conferences and workshops for providing a platform for interaction and exchange of views by various agencies, academia, entrepreneurs and working executives.
9. To organize visits and exchange programmes and to conduct research for generating new knowledge of management to accelerate the process of entrepreneurship and skill development activities.
10. To provide motivational and managerial traits and other training needs and support the skill development activities particularly in establishing service and knowledge-based enterprises and export-oriented units.
11. To act as a catalyst for the development of self-employment/entrepreneurship, industry/business and to document and disseminate information related to self-employment and sources of finance etc.
12. To undertake joint research projects and collaborative works with institutes/universities of national and international repute which are interested in entrepreneurship and skill development within the country and abroad.
13. To undertake outreach action programmes for creating awareness and sensitization of entrepreneurship and incubating the entrepreneurial units in the state of Manipur.
14. To adopt village(s) and provide necessary intellectual inputs for their socio-economic and livelihood development and create a model village.
15. To evolve linkages with industry, government departments, banks, financial institutions, NGOs, civil society organizations and other academic institutions to promote the entrepreneurship and skill development culture in the state and disseminate information related to self-employment, hand-holding activities and sources of finance.
VISION AND MISSION
The vision of the Department/Centre is to become an excellent centre of higher learning on entrepreneurship by 2030. Keeping this vision in mind, the mission of the department/centre has an objective to act as a catalyst to the promotion and advancement of entrepreneurship and skill development activities in the state of Manipur in particular and the nation in general.
The
Department presently offers the following UGC-recognized professional
programmes which is aligned with the National Skills Qualifications
Framework (NSQF) Skill Development Programme. All the students of these
programmes are enrolled based on Common University Entrance Test (CUET)
conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). The students are also
assessed by the respective Sector Skill Councils which are recognized by
National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) :
