In pursuance of Resolution No. 10 of the Deans’ Committee Meeting held on 06/05/2025, an Indian Knowledge System (IKS) Centre has been established in the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology, Manipur University.
The Centre building was formally inaugurated on 26 March 2026 by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, in the esteemed presence of Prof. Oinam Ranjit Singh, Director, Centre for Indian Knowledge System, Manipur University. The establishment of the Centre marks a significant step towards the promotion, preservation, and conservation of India’s rich intellectual and cultural heritage.
The Centre aims to foster interdisciplinary research on traditional knowledge systems, indigenous sciences, cultural practices, oral traditions, philosophy, archaeology, history, literature, and ecological knowledge embedded within Indian civilization. Since its inception, the Centre has actively undertaken various academic initiatives, including the organization of seminars, workshops, and conferences to promote awareness and facilitate scholarly discourse on Indian Knowledge Systems.
The Centre has also contributed to academic scholarship through the publication of six edited volumes, highlighting diverse aspects of indigenous knowledge, cultural heritage, and traditional practices. A major focus of the Centre is the documentation, conservation, and preservation of the traditional knowledge systems of Northeast India and beyond. Through systematic research, documentation, and publication, the Centre strives to safeguard valuable traditional knowledge for future generations.
By integrating indigenous perspectives into mainstream academic discourse on Indian Knowledge Systems, the Centre contributes to the broader national vision of revitalizing India’s knowledge traditions and strengthening the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage.
