Manipur University, Canchipur, Imphal, June 5, 2026: The Centre for Myanmar Studies, Manipur University, in collaboration with Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, observed World Environment Day 2026 with a bamboo plantation programme under the theme “Bamboo for Life” at the Centre premises on 5th June 2026.

The programme was organized under the initiative of Prof. M. C. Arunkumar, Director, Centre for Myanmar Studies, along with faculty members, staff, students of the Centre, and members of AIMS, Manipur.

As part of the observance, two significant bamboo species—Wa-Bo (Dendrocalamus brandisii (Munro) Kurz) from Myanmar and Utang Bamboo (Bambusa tulda Roxb.)—were planted. The plantation symbolized the ecological and cultural ties between Manipur and Myanmar while highlighting the crucial role of bamboo in environmental sustainability.

Speaking on the occasion, the organizers emphasized that bamboo serves as an important resource for climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and rural development. They noted that bamboo-based solutions can play a significant role in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.

The programme underscored the importance of observing World Environment Day not merely through discussions and awareness campaigns, but through meaningful actions such as plantation drives, conservation efforts, and active community participation. Participants also highlighted the need to protect indigenous bamboo species and encourage nature-based solutions in response to climate change.

The Centre for Myanmar Studies and AIMS, Manipur reaffirmed their commitment to organizing similar environmental awareness, plantation, and conservation initiatives in the future.

The occasion held additional significance as 5th June is also celebrated as the Foundation Day of Manipur University, making the plantation programme a symbolic and auspicious beginning towards a greener and more sustainable future.

The event concluded with a collective pledge to strengthen environmental stewardship and promote sustainable practices for the benefit of future generations.
