Manipur University, 31-8-2025: The Department of Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS), Manipur University, Canchipur, successfully organized the “Sunday on Cycle” event on 31st August 2025 as part of the National Sports Day 2025 celebrations. The programme, held in collaboration with the Fit India Campaign Committee, Fit India Club, and NSS Cell, Manipur University, commenced at 7:30 a.m. from the University Traffic Island. It was conducted under the national theme “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein!” initiated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of India.

The event began with a felicitation ceremony by NSS volunteers, followed by the presentation of a special memento from the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor to Ngangbam Soniya Devi Chanu in recognition of her achievements. To promote environmental sustainability, dignitaries also took part in a plant-watering activity.
Delivering the welcome address, Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh, Programme Coordinator of NSS Cell and FICC & FIC, highlighted that “Sunday on Cycle” is part of a national initiative launched in 2024 to promote fitness, fight obesity, and encourage cycling as an inclusive, eco-friendly form of exercise.
In his speech, Prof. M. Premjit Singh underlined the significance of fitness for both physical and mental well-being. Olympian Ngangbam Soniya Devi Chanu expressed her gratitude to Manipur University and called for greater public participation to strengthen sports culture at national and international levels.
Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, emphasized that a fit nation is a strong nation. He reiterated the role of fitness initiatives like “Sunday on Cycle” in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and reaffirmed the university’s goal of becoming a single-use plastic-free campus.
Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh, President of the function, spoke on holistic health—physical, mental, social, and spiritual—drawing from the World Health Organization’s definition of health.
The cycling rally was flagged off by Shri T. Shantikumar Singh, with the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor leading the ride. Faculty members, students, and cycling enthusiasts from across Manipur joined the rally. A total of 200 cyclists participated, reflecting the collective commitment to health, fitness, and unity.
The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh.
