Manipur University, 14th November 2025: The Department of Sociology and the Women’s Studies Centre, Manipur University, jointly organised a Special Film Screening of the documentary Rani Gaidinliu: The Iconic Woman of North-East India on 14 November 2025 at 3:00 p.m. The event was held at the Department of Sociology, Manipur University, Canchipur, with the objective of honouring the life, legacy, and nationalist contributions of Rani Gaidinliu, one of Northeast India’s most revered freedom fighters.
The programme brought together distinguished dignitaries and scholars. Prof. L. Memcha, Dean, School of Social Sciences, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Mr. Deepak SV and Ms. Dimple Dugar, Directors of the film, were present as the Guests of Honour. Prof. Ajailiu Niumai, Head, CSSEIP, University of Hyderabad, delivered the Keynote Address, offering deep insights into the making of the film and Rani Gaidinliu’s contributions to anti-colonial resistance movements. The programme was presided over by Dr. M. Lilee, Head, Department of Sociology, and Director, Women’s Studies Centre, Manipur University.
The event began with the arrival of invitees, followed by the University Anthem and the felicitation of dignitaries with Lengyans. A formal welcome address led into the screening of the documentary. Produced by the National Film Development Corporation Limited (India), the film highlighted Rani Gaidinliu’s political courage, spiritual leadership, resistance to British colonial authority, and lifelong advocacy for indigenous identity and cultural preservation.
After the screening, the dignitaries shared valuable reflections on their inspirations and experiences during the making of the film. They also discussed the relevance of Rani Gaidinliu’s legacy in contemporary discourse on indigenous rights, gender empowerment, and national integration. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks, a group photo session, and refreshments.
Overall, the programme successfully achieved its aim of sensitising the academic community to the profound contributions of Rani Gaidinliu, reaffirming her significance in India’s freedom struggle and the socio-cultural history of Northeast India.
