Manipur Universiy, December 19, 2025: The Women’s Studies Centre, Manipur University, successfully organised a One-Day National Seminar (Hybrid Mode) on “Women, Conflict and Society (NSWCS’2025)” on December 19, 2025, at the Department of Sociology, Manipur University, Canchipur. The seminar aimed to foster critical academic dialogue on the complex intersections of gender, conflict, violence, resilience, and social transformation, with a special focus on Manipur and the Northeast Indian region.

The inaugural session commenced at 10:00 a.m. with the University Anthem, followed by the felicitation of dignitaries and a welcome address. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Ajailiu Niumai, Head, Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion, University of Hyderabad, who presented a nuanced sociological perspective on women’s agency, structural violence, and conflict transformation. She highlighted both the possibilities and limitations of gendered agency in conflict-affected frontier regions. Prof. Rajendra Kshetri (Retd.), Former Head, Department of Sociology, Manipur University, attended as the Guest of Honour and elaborated on the critical role of women in conflict management. Prof. L. Memcha, Dean, School of Social Sciences, Manipur University, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and underscored the importance of Women’s Studies Centres as spaces positioned at the intersection of academic inquiry and social engagement. She also highlighted how the spread of information through new media has reshaped realities, particularly for women amid emerging challenges.

The programme was presided over by Dr. M. Lilee, Director, Women’s Studies Centre, Manipur University. In her presidential address, Dr. Lilee juxtaposed the symbolic high status accorded to women in Indian society with the lived realities of women’s suffering as reflected in various government reports. As the Convener of the seminar, she also outlined the motivations and objectives behind organising the national seminar. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks and a group photograph.

The seminar featured four parallel technical sessions conducted in both offline and online modes. Technical Session I (Offline), moderated by Prof. N. Tejmani Singh, Department of Commerce, Manipur University, focused on women’s roles in peacebuilding, displacement, poverty, labour participation, patriarchy, and digital financial risks in Manipur. Empirically grounded papers highlighted women’s lived experiences during ethnic conflicts, interventions in relief camps, and socio-cultural negotiations.

Technical Session II (Online), moderated by Dr. Rajni Bala, Head, Department of Sociology, BUC College, Batala, Punjab, brought together scholars from different regions of India. The session deliberated on feminist theory, social media discourse, inheritance rights, livelihood disruptions, and empowerment narratives, linking local conflicts with national and transnational feminist debates.

Technical Sessions III and IV (Offline) addressed a wide range of themes including gendered displacement, trauma and resilience, women’s entrepreneurship, incarceration, cultural production, environmental degradation, disability, domestic violence, transwomen’s narratives, and grassroots environmental resistance, particularly in contexts such as Loktak Lake. These sessions highlighted how women function simultaneously as victims, survivors, and agents of change in conflict-ridden societies. Technical Session III was moderated by Prof. L. Prabhakar Singh, Director, MIMS, Manipur University, while Technical Session IV was moderated by Dr. M. Lilee, Director, WSC, Manipur University.

The seminar witnessed participation from around 100 delegates, invitees, and scholars, with approximately 40 single- and joint-authored papers presented. Certificates were distributed during the valedictory session. In the concluding vote of thanks, the organising committee expressed sincere gratitude to Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University, for his generous financial support.

Overall, the seminar provided a strong interdisciplinary platform for scholars, researchers, and students to critically engage with the gendered dimensions of conflict and society. It made a meaningful contribution to feminist scholarship and policy-relevant discourse, particularly in the context of Manipur and the wider Northeast Indian region.
