Manipur University, June 5, 2026: The Department of Environmental Science and the NSS Cell, Manipur University, successfully observed World Environment Day 2026 under the theme “Mission LiFE: Lifestyle for Environment” on 5 June 2026 at the lawn adjoining the Department of Anthropology, Manipur University, Canchipur.

The programme was organized under the guidance of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, with the objective of promoting environmental responsibility and encouraging sustainable lifestyles among students and the wider community.

The observance was conducted under the leadership of Prof. R. S. Khoiyangbam, Head, Department of Environmental Science, and Prof. Laishram Santosh Singh, Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell, Manipur University.

The programme was graced by Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam, Vice-Chancellor (i/c), Manipur University, as the Chief Guest. Other dignitaries present included Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Registrar, Prof. Laishram Rajendrakumar Singh, Finance Officer, Shri T. Shantikumar Singh, Controller of Examinations, and Er. N. Thoiba Singh, University Engineer, who joined the event as members of the presidium.

Welcoming the gathering, Prof. Laishram Santosh Singh highlighted the significance of World Environment Day and emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges through sustainable lifestyle choices.

In her address, Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam, Vice-Chancellor (i/c), underscored the importance of environmental conservation and the role of youth in advancing the objectives of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). She encouraged students, scholars, and volunteers to adopt eco-friendly habits and actively contribute towards building a greener and more sustainable future.

As part of the observance and in support of the nationwide campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” launched by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, a tree plantation programme was conducted on the university campus. Members of the presidium, Heads of Departments, faculty members, NSS Programme Officers, NSS volunteers, students, and staff actively participated in planting saplings, reaffirming their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Prof. R. S. Khoiyangbam, who appreciated the enthusiastic participation of all stakeholders and urged everyone to continue adopting environmentally responsible practices in their daily lives. The event concluded with light refreshments.

The observance reflected Manipur University's continued commitment to environmental awareness, sustainability, and community participation in support of national initiatives aimed at creating a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment.
