Imphal, September 30, 2026: The newly elected Office Bearers and Class Representatives of the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) for the academic session 2026–27 took oath at a ceremony held at the Court Hall, Manipur University, on Wednesday.

The oath-taking ceremony coincided with the observance of the 130th Birth Anniversary of Hijam Irabot. The University paid floral tribute to the noted leader on the occasion, adding significance to the induction of a new generation of student representatives.

Prof. R.K. Hemakumar Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University and Patron of MUSU, congratulated the newly elected representatives and extended his best wishes to the new team. He also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing student leadership, teachers, students and all those involved in conducting the election.

Recalling his association with an earlier MUSU election and oath-taking ceremony, Prof. Hemakumar said the occasion brought back memories of the University’s student democratic process. He expressed hope that the newly elected representatives would discharge their responsibilities with commitment and work constructively for the welfare of the students and the University.

Dr. Khwairakpam Herachandra Singh, Member of the MUSU Election Committee, delivered the welcome address. He described the coincidence of the oath-taking ceremony with the observance of Hijam Irabot’s 130th Birth Anniversary as significant and expressed hope that the new representatives would contribute positively to the activities and development of the University. He also thanked the faculty members, staff, students and others who contributed to the successful conduct of the programme.

Prof. A. Dilip Kumar Singh, Returning Officer for the MUSU Election 2026–27, spoke on the conduct of the election and appreciated the cooperation extended by students and different departments of the University. He said the various stages of the election, including scrutiny and polling, were completed peacefully with the cooperation of the University community.

Addressing the newly elected team, Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh, Dean of Students’ Welfare urged the Office Bearers and representatives to begin their tenure with proper planning. He suggested that the Union hold an early meeting to prepare an annual calendar of activities, assess the budget required for proposed programmes and maintain reasonable intervals between major activities.

He highlighted the efforts made to conduct the MUSU election within a tight academic schedule and in accordance with the provisions governing the Students’ Union. He thanked the Election Committee, University authorities, students and candidates for their cooperation throughout the election process.

Prof Ibohal also stressed the need for collective decision-making and regular meetings among the representatives. Referring to the MUSU Constitution, he encouraged the new Union to study it carefully and, wherever amendments are considered necessary, take them up through the appropriate General Body process. He further emphasised responsible expenditure in accordance with available resources.

Newly elected MUSU President Laishram Sanathoi Singh, in his address, thanked the student community for the trust placed in the new leadership. He called upon the newly elected Office Bearers and Class Representatives to work together as one team, stressing that collective effort would be essential to serve the students and contribute to the University.

Outgoing MUSU President Nongpoknganba Yambem congratulated Laishram Sanathoi Singh and the newly elected team and wished them a successful tenure in serving the student community and contributing to the growth of Manipur University.

The seven newly elected Office Bearers of MUSU for 2026–27 are Laishram Sanathoi Singh, President; Sober Chingangbam, Vice-President; Loukrakpam Tomba Meitei, General Secretary; Lanthoinganba Yumnam, Finance Secretary; Alvin Nongmaithem, Cultural Secretary; Mahesh Laishram, Sports Secretary; and Kaminikumar Leimapokpam, Literary and Publication Secretary.

Sagolsem Roshan Singh of the Department of Manipuri was elected as the Research Scholars’ Representative. The new MUSU team also includes elected Class Representatives from different departments and centres of the University.

The MUSU Election 2026–27 was conducted under an Election Committee constituted by the University. Prof. A. Dilip Kumar Singh served as the Returning Officer, while Dr. Khwairakpam Herachandra Singh and Dr. Huidrom Suraj Singh were members of the Election Committee.

The election process culminated in the oath-taking ceremony and the formal handing over and taking charge by the MUSU 2026–27 team. With the completion of the oath-taking ceremony, the Election Committee constituted for conducting the MUSU Election 2026–27 was also formally dissolved.

The programme concluded with a call to the newly elected student representatives to uphold democratic values, work collectively and contribute responsibly to the academic and overall development of Manipur University.
