Manipur University Achieves Historic Milestone with First Successful Breeding of Mahseer in Northeast India
Manipur University, 12 October 2025: In a landmark achievement for aquaculture and biodiversity conservation in Northeast India, a team of fishery scientists at Manipur University has successfully bred the Mahseer (Ngara in Manipuri) - Neolissocheilus stracheyi cf - for the first time in the region.
The breakthrough was accomplished by a team led by Dr. Rameshori Yumnam, Team Leader at the Freshwater Ichthyology and Sustainable Aquaculture (FISA) Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Manipur University, in collaboration with Dr. M.S. Akhtar of the ICAR–Central Institute of Coldwater Fisheries (CICFR), Bhimtal, Uttarakhand, and Mr. Somirin Varam, Young Professional working under the Mahseer Project at Manipur University.
This successful breeding took place at the newly established Mahseer Hatchery at Manipur University and marks a major step forward in the conservation of this ecologically significant and culturally iconic fish species.
Often referred to as the “Tiger of Indian Rivers,” the Mahseer symbolizes the health of freshwater ecosystems but faces threats from overfishing, habitat loss, and pollution. Notably, the Golden Mahseer was listed as an endangered species by the IUCN in 2018.
“This achievement opens new avenues for species conservation, ecotourism, and sustainable aquaculture in Manipur,” said Dr. Rameshori Yumnam. “Given the Mahseer’s popularity as a sport fish, this success also paves the way for developing Mahseer sanctuaries and eco-tourism ventures, which can enhance local livelihoods and contribute to the state’s economy.”
The establishment of the Mahseer Hatchery and the ongoing research efforts are part of Manipur University’s broader vision to safeguard the rich aquatic biodiversity of Northeast India while promoting sustainable development through science, innovation, and community participation.
