Manipur University, 12 April 2025: The National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell of Manipur University, Canchipur, organized a special event to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and observe Poshan Pakhwada under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. The programme was held under the supervision of Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University.

The observance took place at 8:00 A.M. in the Centenary Hall of Manipur University. The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh, Dean of Students’ Welfare, Manipur University as Chief Guest; Dr. Y. Premananda Singh, Head, Department of Law, as Guest of Honour; Prof. S. Opendra Singh, Head, Department of Statistics, as Guest of Honour; and Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh, Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell, as President of the event.

The programme began with the NSS song, followed by a solemn floral tribute to the portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. In his welcome address, Dr. Dalip, Programme Officer, NSS Unit IV, extended warm greetings to all dignitaries, NSS Programme Officers, and volunteers.

In his address, Dr. Y. Premananda Singh highlighted the enduring relevance of Dr. Ambedkar’s vision and emphasized the foundational importance of the Indian Constitution. He noted that the Constitution is not only the supreme law of the land but also the cornerstone of India’s democratic framework, safeguarding citizens' rights and ensuring justice, equality, and liberty for all.

Prof. S. Opendra Singh underscored the meaningful connection between the observance and the objectives of the National Service Scheme. He stated that NSS serves as a dynamic platform for student development, fostering leadership, empathy, and responsibility through community service.

Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh spoke on the historical and social contributions of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He emphasized the importance of upholding the values enshrined in the Constitution and described the event as a tribute to the legacy of the "Father of the Indian Constitution."

In his presidential address, Dr. Laishram Santosh Singh mentioned that although Dr. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary is officially observed on April 14, the university held the event earlier on April 12 in deference to Cheiraoba, a significant indigenous festival in Manipur. He urged NSS volunteers to take active roles in campus beautification and waste management as an expression of true NSS spirit.

The formal function concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Kh. Herachandra Singh, NSS Programme Officer.

Following the ceremony, the NSS Cell organized several impactful activities, including: A poster campaign highlighting the ideals of Dr. Ambedkar and Poshan Pakhwada. A cleanliness drive across the university campus. An ex-tempore speech competition on the theme “Healthy Lifestyle to Address Obesity in Children” as part of the Poshan initiative.
The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. H. Suraj Singh, Programme Officer, NSS Unit III, Manipur University.
