Manipur University, November 4, 2025: Manipur University (MU) successfully organised a Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) on the theme “India’s Strategic Partnership in the East” on November 4, 2025, at Hall No. 1, Manipur Institute of Management Studies (MIMS), Manipur University. The event was held as part of the Outreach Initiative of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India.
The lecture series aimed to deepen understanding of India’s strategic partnerships with its neighbouring and ASEAN countries while inspiring students to reflect on the importance of building a self-reliant nation (Atmanirbhar Bharat) to realise the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
The session was graced by Prof. (Dr.) Jitendra Nath Misra, retired member of the Indian Foreign Service, who served as Ambassador to Portugal and Laos and Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, as the Chief Guest and Guest Speaker. Other distinguished dignitaries present included Prof. G.P. Prasain, Former Vice-Chancellor, Tripura University and Head, Department of Commerce, MU; Prof. Memcha Loitongbam, Dean, School of Social Sciences, MU; Prof. Laishram Prabhakar Singh, Director, MIMS, MU; and Shri T. Shantikumar Singh, Controller of Examinations, MU.
Delivering the keynote address, Ambassador Jitendra Nath Misra highlighted Manipur’s immense potential in the service sector, sports economy, and its pivotal role in India’s Act East Policy. Drawing from his diplomatic experience, he elaborated on India’s relationships with neighbouring nations—especially in Southeast and East Asia—through the lens of realist theory and Kautilya’s philosophy. He emphasised India’s aspiration to maintain peaceful and mutually beneficial relations with nations such as China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and the United States, underlining their economic, cultural, and strategic interdependence. He further encouraged students to pursue diligence, integrity, and compassion in their efforts to contribute to a self-reliant India.
In his address, Prof. Laishram Prabhakar Singh, Director, MIMS, underscored the need for deeper engagement between India and ASEAN nations through enhanced connectivity, cooperation, and shared growth. In her presidential remarks, Prof. Memcha Loitongbam highlighted Manipur’s strategic importance in advancing India’s Act East Policy, while Prof. G.P. Prasain emphasised the opportunities that the policy brings for Manipur’s development and prosperity.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. Sorokhaibam Keshorjit Singh, who highlighted the relevance of strategic partnerships in promoting regional peace and stability. The event was hosted by Dr. Jibon Kumar Sharma, Convener of the DLS, and Dr. Chetna, Faculty Member, MIMS, as Co-host. Mr. Nelson Chongtham presented the profile of the Chief Guest, and Dr. Sanasam Somokanta Singh delivered the vote of thanks.
More than 150 students participated in the lecture, which significantly contributed to enhancing critical thinking and global awareness among students. The DLS successfully broadened perspectives on international relations, aligning academic learning with India’s foreign policy and strategic vision.
