Manipur University, 15 May 2026: The Department of Sociology, Manipur University, observed the International Day of Families on 15th May 2026 at the department premises with the objective of highlighting the importance of family as a fundamental social institution in contemporary society.
The programme commenced with the arrival of invitees and dignitaries, followed by the University Anthem. The dignitaries were felicitated with traditional Lengyans. The welcome address emphasized the significance of the observance in today’s rapidly changing social context marked by increasing individualism, changing family structures, and evolving social values.
The inaugural session was graced by Prof. L. Memcha, Dean, School of Social Sciences, Manipur University, as the Chief Guest. In her address, she highlighted the enduring relevance of family, remarking that “home is where family is.” The programme was presided over by Prof. M. Lilee, Head, Department of Sociology, who reflected on the sociological importance of strengthening family relationships amidst emerging social challenges.
A special invited lecture on the theme “The Crumbling Foundation of the Family Institution and Bleak Future of Children” was delivered by Prof. Haobijam Vokendro Singh, Head, Department of Anthropology, Manipur University. In his lecture, he critically examined the conceptual evolution of family and the diversity of family structures across different societies. He elaborated on child-rearing practices in various cultures and emphasized that human behaviour is shaped more by culture than biology.
Prof. Vokendro Singh also highlighted the role of family in nation-building, describing it as the cradle of citizenship and values. Drawing on global statistics, he discussed issues such as income disparity, delayed marriage, rising divorce rates, and changing family structures, linking them to child-rearing practices and the socio-psychological well-being of children. He stressed the need for collective societal efforts to preserve family values, responsibilities, and emotional support systems.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by a group photo session and light refreshments. The observance was attended by faculty members, scholars, students, and invited guests from various departments of the university.
