Manipur University, 29 June 2026: The Department of Statistics, Manipur University, observed the 20th National Statistics Day on Monday at the university campus under the theme “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data.” The programme was organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, widely regarded as the Father of Indian Statistics. The observance focused on the importance of statistics in governance, public policy, planning and academic development. Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) of Manipur University, Prof. Sumitra Phanjoubam, attended the programme as the Chief Guest. Prof. R.K. Hemakumar Singh, Dean of the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Manipur University, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. The function was presided over by Prof. Salam Opendra Singh, Head of the Department of Statistics, Manipur University.
As part of the programme, Dr. P. Jashwanta Singh, Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics, Imphal College, delivered a special lecture on “Causes of Low Enrollment in Statistics in UG and Remedies to Encourage Enrollment.” The lecture drew attention to the continuing challenge of low student enrollment in statistics at the undergraduate level. It also examined possible measures to encourage students to take up the subject at a time when data literacy has become increasingly important for governance, research, administration and employment.
The theme of this year’s National Statistics Day placed special emphasis on administrative data, which has become a significant resource for evidence-based decision making. Administrative data generated through government departments, public institutions and service delivery systems can help improve planning, monitoring and implementation of welfare programmes.
The observance at Manipur University also reflected the academic relevance of statistics beyond classroom instruction. In a state like Manipur, where public policy requires reliable information onpopulation, education, health, livelihoods, environment and development indicators, the role of statistics assumes wider institutional importance. Speakers at the programme highlighted the need to strengthen statistics education and promote greater awareness among students about its practical relevance. The event also served as a platform to discuss how academic institutions can contribute to building data competence among young learners.
National Statistics Day is observed every year on June 29 to honour the contribution of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis to the development of statistical systems in India. His work laid the foundation for modern statistical planning and continues to influence policy and research institutions across the country.
