Dr Kh. Rishikanta, Sr. Scientist, ICAR, Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat welcomed the gathering.

Dr M. Srinivasa Rao expressed that NABARD is a development agency working especially for the rural areas. He urged taking students to the field as a part of their practical education. Further, he added that instead of waiting for the successful completion/outcome of various research projects, one should think about developing existing works immediately. He also recommended focusing on local seeds and making farmers use the same.

Dr RK Nimai expressed that one should not depend on the resource-scarce State Government only for bringing about agricultural development. Therefore, the need of the hour, according to him, is to meaningfully take matters into one’s hands and move progressively to develop the agricultural and horticultural sectors including the protection and promotion of Yongchak.

Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, the Chief Guest of the function stated that there is a need for intervention of new technologies in Yongchak cultivation. He congratulated the organisers for bringing together several research institutions in the endeavour of saving Yongchak in Manipur. He wished economic, cultural and scientifically action-orientated recommendations from the present workshop and appealed for the energization of the recommendations with field conditions.

In his presidential address, Prof. Rajmohan remarked that Manipur’s share of the biodiversity hotspot of India is enormous. He shared that saving the precious bio-diversity means saving ourselves. He expressed apprehension of genetically modified crops replacing the native crops in the present scenario. He also remarked that Manipur has natural dyes and Yongchak is one such dye that carries commercial potential. A holistic approach, according to him, is the only way to protect and promote Yongchak.

During the Valedictory Function, prizes were distributed to the winners of the Yongchak Competition in which 40 participants (stalls) took part. The first prize went to Th. Gonmei, Sibilong, Tamenglong (Stall No. 27). The second prize went to Thangnei Kom, Thayong, Kangpokpi (Stall No. 2) and the third prize went to Khainibou, Tamei, Tamenglong (Stall No. 12–15).
