Manipur University, November 6, 2025: A One-Day Training Workshop for Gender Champions was successfully organised under the theme “Championing Gender Equality: Empowering Youth and Embracing Diversity” by the Gender Champions, Manipur University, in collaboration with the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), Manipur University, at the Training Hall, DVSSD, Manipur University, Canchipur.
The inaugural session began with the arrival and felicitation of dignitaries, followed by a warm Welcome Address delivered by Dr. Yumlembam Khogen, Nodal Teacher, Gender Champions, and Convener of the Workshop. The occasion was graced by Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University, as the Chief Guest; Prof. A. Rajmani Singh, Director, IQAC, as the Guest of Honour; and Prof. R.K. Lonibala, Presiding Officer, ICC, as the President of the Function.
During the inaugural session, the dignitaries distributed Identity Cards, Badges, and IEC materials to the newly appointed nine Gender Champions, acknowledging their vital role as catalysts for change in promoting inclusivity and equality on campus.
In his address, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor commended the initiative as a significant step toward realizing the goals of SDG 5 – Gender Equality within higher education institutions. The Guest of Honour, Prof. Rajmani, highlighted that Manipur University has been performing commendably in advancing gender equality and fostering a safe academic environment. The President of the function, Prof. Lonibala, emphasized the importance of inclusive participation of men, women, and transgender persons, in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the University Grants Commission (UGC), which encourage gender sensitization and youth leadership in universities.
The inaugural session concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by the Gender Champions, followed by a group photo session and refreshments.
The workshop featured four technical sessions addressing key issues of gender equity, inclusion, and social transformation:
Dr. Mayanglambam Lilee, Director, Women’s Studies Centre – “Utilizing Key Concepts of Gender Studies and Realization of Gender Justice.”
Dr. Thajamanbi Yumkham, Department of Law – “Gender-based Discrimination, Relevant Laws, and Policies towards Gender Equality.”
Dr. Beoncy Laishram, Medical Officer – “Gender Biases and Stereotypes: Reflections and Responses.”
Mr. Gurumayum Ravi Sharma, Administrator, Women Helpline (181) – “Behaviour Change and Action Planning for Addressing Gender Issues.”
In addition to the Gender Champions, the workshop saw active participation from ICC members, subject experts, faculty members, and student representatives, reflecting a broad-based engagement on gender awareness.
The event concluded with a Valedictory Session, where participation certificates were distributed to the attendees. The workshop reaffirmed Manipur University’s commitment to promoting gender sensitization, diversity, and inclusive leadership among its students—aligning with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
