Framework and Organization of the M.Sc. Course:
The course structure of M.Sc. in Earth Sciences (Geology) has been so designed that a student is provided with a fairly wide range of subjects both in pure and applied aspects of Earth Sciences. Considerable interlinking between the pure and applied aspects of Earth Sciences has been included so that students are trained with up to date knowledge of the subjects.
Field training/work forms an integral part of the course. All students must attend the fieldwork every year in the respective academic/semester sessions.
A few Optional/Elective papers have been included in the syllabus. More Special or Elective papers may be offered with the availability of faculty members. However, contents of the compulsory papers are so designed that each of them include all major advances in their respective fields so that students can get optimum benefits from competitive examination point of view such as National Eligibility Test (NET), Geological Survey of India (GSI), UPSC, etc.
Scheme of Examination:
Examination of each theory paper will consist of 6 questions. The question no. 1 carrying 15 marks will be objective or very short answer type of question such as multiple choice, fill in blanks, matching, diagrams, conceptual definitions, etc. covering the entire syllabus of that respective theory paper. There will be no internal choice in this question. The remaining 5 questions will be of essay type or short notes, explanatory notes, etc. carrying 12 marks or parts thereof. Option or internal choice if any, shall be within the same section.
Assessment of the Course:
The performance of a student in a given course will be judged in one or more of the following manner - the attendance, the internal/class tests, the home assignment, the class seminar, etc. and the semester examination. Each session will be followed by the semester examination in theory as well as in practical. The weightage as well as scheme of theory and practical examinations are outlined as below:
Theory Examination:
- External Examination (Semester Examination) : 75%
- Internal Examination : 25%
- External Examination : 100 %
- Seminar (internal) : 100 %
Each student is compulsorily required to undergo about 3 weeks of field training in an academic session usually between semester break. This will consist of geological and structural mapping, geological field work in areas of mineral deposits, mines, stratigraphic type sections, visits to various geological and related organizations. Each student is required to submit a written report of the field work and take a viva-voce test on that field trip. The weightage of different components of field training/work for the purpose of evaluation of a student’s performance shall be as follows:
- Field trainig : 40%
- Field Report : 40%
- Viva - voce : 20%
Seminar
In order to inculcate a sense of confidence and self reliance, and with an objective to train the student in the art of public speaking and self expression, each student shall deliver a talk on a selected topic of Earth Sciences. The topic of the seminar may be selected by the student under the advice of a faculty member. A write-up about the seminar topic shall be submitted by the student before the presentation. Transparencies and other projections may be used by the student during presentation. The student’s performance in the seminar shall be evaluated under the following scheme:
- Presentation : 40%
- Write-up of the topic : 40%
- Ability to answer questions : 20%
Dissertation (ES 510):
Every student in the M.Sc. course is required to undertake a dissertation work in the 4th semester of M.Sc. final year. The project may be an experimental investigation, field work and laboratory studies, a theoretical investigation accompanied by computational work, data processing and analysis, or a combination of these. The exact nature of the project and the problem to be studied shall be decided at the end of the first year by the Head of the department in consultation with the faculty members and students. After the project is completed, the student will submit a dissertation based on the results obtained in his/her investigation/work. Finally, the student is expected to defend his/her findings as embodied in his/her dissertation before a Board of Examiners and take an oral examination. The panel of examiners and scheme of evaluation shall be as follows:

- Field work / Laboratory work : 30%
- Viva-voce : 20%
For each examination/course undertaken by a student including the field training, seminar, etc. a certain minimum percentage of marks is to be secured by the student in order to pass the M. Sc. course. The details are summarized as follows:
- Percentage of aggregate marks to pass the M. Sc. course (Prev. & Final) : 45%
- Minimum percentage of marks to pass each of the academic session : 40%
- Minimum percentage of marks to pass a theory paper : 25%
- Minimum percentage of marks to pass a practical paper : 40%
- Minimum percentage of marks to pass class tests, field training, etc. : 40%
Attendance:
A student is required to attend the classes regularly. A minimum of 75% attendance is required to be eligible for appearing the examination at the end of each session. A student who does not attend the minimum percentage of classes shall not be allowed to appear the examination.
